Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.

Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

The Grants Accountant is responsible for duties related to the oversight, integrity, and analysis of financial data. Duties include financial monitoring and reporting, budget planning and setup, grants management, cash management, procurement review, expenditure monitoring and coding, reconciliations, contract monitoring, and vendor relations. To accomplish this, the Grants Accountant continually monitors activity in the general ledger compared with budget, verifies cash balances, analyzes transactions and discrepancies, and takes corrective action, as necessary. In addition, the Grants Accountant provides financial assistance and coordination to programmatic personnel assigned to a grant/contract to maintain compliance with financial requirements established by the agency or sponsor funding the award and attends all grant review and programming meetings coordinated through the Grants Management Office on an on-going basis through the life cycle of the grant award. This position will present proposals, updates, and final reports to groups through verbal and written reports.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated data entry and software application skills in Excel, Word, Outlook and accounting information systems.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and strong analytical skills and application of professional principles and standards;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex data entry, reconcile departmental and budgetary accounts, and perform accounting level transactional processing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to initiate, research, investigate, analyze, reconcile, and evaluate large quantities of data;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of accounting debits and credits and understand an accounting structure.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and convey policies and procedures and general business practices;
  • Demonstrate a strong attention to detail;
  • Interact frequently with internal and external customers using both verbal and written communication skills to discuss financial processes or issues
  • Work calmly under pressure and use good judgment at all times;
  • Manage multiple tasks/projects with follow through; and
  • Demonstrate intermediate technical skills in Microsoft suite of products (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, etc.).
Additional Considerations
  • Experience in grants management preferred.
  • Experience in budgeting, financial reporting and accountability, policy interpretation, and/or procurement preferred.
  • Higher education and/or governmental accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience working in an accounting office and performing accounting transactions with little or no supervision with great accuracy and timeliness.
  • Demonstrate ability to reconcile bank statements with large transaction volume and complexity.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP);
  • Knowledge of the CAPP Manual and state financial processes
  • Knowledge of Peoplesoft Accounting Information System (AIS) software;
  • Knowledge of Peoplesoft Student Information System (SIS) software;
  • Knowledge of grants/contracts and budgeting methodologies
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal and state policy
